Cornelius Drebbel, alias Cornelius van Drebbel, a Dutch inventor took up William Bourne’s idea of an undersea boat and constructed the very first working prototype of a sub in the 17th century. This was merely a modified version of the typical rowboat. There is no surviving sketches of Drebbel’s 1620 submarine, and accounts are few. But from the ones available, it is said that the submarine was “covered in greased leather, with a watertight hatch in the middle, a rudder and four oars.
